I am going out on a limb here, but could it possibly be related to
using hal instead of evdev ? The reason I suggest is because when I
did a system update, there were a bunch of changes to the X Server
configuration that broke the mouse drivers - see if
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/318129 applies to
you.
