I believe there are quite a number of machines with wireless cards 
which are not supported by linux.  There may also be modems which 
aren't supported -- as fewer people are using them, it's harder to find 
information about whether they work or not.

So if those two things are important to you (I use both, although the 
modem isn't used regularly), be especially careful to check that 
they're supported before buying.

Also, quite a lot of people I know have switched to apple laptops in 
the past couple of years -- you might want to investigate them too.  
(And apple gives pretty nice educational discounts.)
