It's a brand new cable, I just bought it. I'm afraid I'm not an
electronics person, I can't make myself new cables.
I swapped back over to the old cable, but it still doesn't work.

Strangely, from the desktop, there is *no* output from tcpdump during
renegotiation.
When I do a ping from the desktop to the laptop (which won't work
because the link isn't up) then tcpdump gives the following output:

07:39:40.004911 0:2:e3:1f:d9:b4 ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff 0806 42: arp who-has
192.168.33.2 tell 192.168.33.1
07:39:41.002460 0:2:e3:1f:d9:b4 ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff 0806 42: arp who-has
192.168.33.2 tell 192.168.33.1

I'm afraid I can't yet give tcpdump output from the laptop as tcpdump
isn't installed there (and I can't install it until either it's at work
or I get the home network to work...)

(sigh)
