Can you verify that the network cable works? I would crimp a new cable
and test.
I recently faced a rather irritaing issue at a client site where the box
would intermittently vanish off the network. Turned out to be a loose
contact with the internal hub (temporary setup needing sniffing, they do
use switches otherwise).

Also, tcpdump output from both hosts would be nice.
