There are lots of programs that try and do this sort of thing; here's a few 
you might want to take a look at.  Depending on what you want to do, a 
different tool might be appropriate.  I'm not totally familiar with all of 
Illustrator's features, but here are some vector-graphics drawing programs:

karbon (used to be killustrator, then kontour; part of KOffice) - it's come a 
long way.  Seems pretty Illustrator-like.

sodipodi - it has kind of a GIMP-like interface and looks like it does a lot.

OpenOffice's Draw - If you just want to do one simple image, and don't want to 
worry about learning a new program or installing anything new, it might be 
easiest.  It's not totally full-featured, though.

If you're looking for more of a diagram editor (like for flowcharts and floor 
plans and things), xfig or dia or qcad might be more appropriate.
