My husband has used it with MySQL (though I've just used it with Oracle) -- it 
is compatible with both.

I don't know about StarOffice, but OpenOffice has a database program similar 
to Access at http://dba.openoffice.org/ -- I haven't used it, but it aims to 
be like Access, so you might want to look into it.
