Well .. I was kind of hoping that the version in debian stable would have
been compiled in a pretty much identical environment to the one that
exists on my machine ...

hmmm ...

it only links against curses (and libc and ld-linux of course)

I'll try to compile it from source later, and then if it doesn't segfault
I'll submit a debian bug report thingy
