The panel thing _only_ happens with applets.  gaim has both an applet
and a non-applet version.  The problem will normally only happen if you
pick things that are in the applet submenus in gnome 1.4.  The core
needed applets have been ported (battery applet, tasklist, workspace
switcher, wanda, stuff like that).
