Dave, this is interesting: could you please expound a bit more on the 
flakiness? I didn't see devfs as a process until Mandrake 8.2, and it annoyed 
me because it leaves a defunct modprobe process gumming up the works. Will I 
cause myself possible problems down the track if I just stop devfs?
