These are generally named pipes. "orbit" is a CORBA implemenation 
used by gnome applications (if I remember correctly). If you are 
running KDE apps you will see "mcop-xxxxx" too.

Inter-application communication pipes for the most part.

Actual details of how CORBA works is rather beyond me, but there is 
probably something on orbit on the gnome website.
