I had the same reaction you did.  I guess it's all relative.

Enlightenment is skinny compared to KDE or Gnome (especially Gnome 2). 
It is very resource intensive compared to IceWM, XFCE, Blackbox, aewm,
Efsane II, HaZe, WindowMaker, AfterStep, etc...
