Close I have got an IDE burner to work on mandrake 8.2 
I used cdrecord.  I didn't install any of the gui stuff.  I followed the 
cd burner howto and it works.   I'm in the process of writtinga perl 
script to make it a little easier.
The only thing I think you may have to do is see that you have the 
newest cdrecord  tools.
