[techtalk] login problem on a cobalt raq3

Hi, everyone!

I have a Cobalt Raq3, which is a Linux web server appliance that uses
a web interface and LCD panel for simple administration. For anything
more advanced i can normally log to it using SSH (or telnet, if it were
enabled.)

Yesterday, everything worked fine. Today when i SSH to it i can log in
and connect, but i don't get a command prompt. I went to the web interface
and enabled telnet briefly to see what would happen, and in that case
i got a login prompt, typed my login and password, then nothing. It doesn't
disconnect, it's just blank.

I suspected a problem with my passwd file, so i tried to FTP in so i
could check that out. When i FTPed i couldn't get past PASS. As soon
as i entered PASS, it just sat there.

The next thing i tried was rebooting, which can be done from the web
interface. Once the box came back up nothing had changed.

HTTP and HTTPS are still working fine.

Do you have any ideas about what to try next? I'd like to try things
that don't require physical access first, because the server is racked
at an ISP that isn't terribly close to my home. Any ideas that *do* require
i go over there are certainly welcome though ... but i really don't know
what i should do.

Thanks for any suggestions!

Smiles,
Christian
