[techtalk] backup solutions

Hi,

Our current backup solution sucks -- Microsoft Backup backs up all windows
stuff and mounts an SMB share to a linux box (thank you samba 2.2!) that
backs up CVS. YUCK! The MS Backup software is flaky and not very good.

We are considering moving the tape drive backups to linux-based backups
rather than windows-based backups. More reliable, better control, etc. I
am wondering if anyone has experience with any linux backup products. Of
course we could do home grown shell scripts and such, but if there is a
good tool out there we would be willing to pay for something worth it (MS
Backup is *not* worth it, and I think we will keep having similar problems
if we stick with a windows-based solution). We may later be able to mount
the share via NFS (with unix services for windows) but I am afraid of this
solution also. ;o)

So... I know linux journal (or linux magazine) had a review of backup
software and there is also a linux journal buyer's guide that can lead me
in the right direction, but if anyone is satisfied with a particular
product that would be nice to know now.

The windows client is 2k server. The linux server (doing the backups) is
debian. Other clients will either be 2k pro or debian.

thanks,
-nicole
