identd is usally started via inetd.
your distro probably has a package for it.
If not, it is a minor issue to download and install.

If you are using IP masquerading you will need to use a modified identd
server specifically for use in such a situation.  This identd server
will need to be on the masquerading gateway as well as all internal
machines whishing to use identd over the masqueraded connection.
