I assume your are opening it via the file browser in KDE. Files by
themselves dont have mime types.. It is some application (browser,
mailclient, filebrowser) which classifies it based on mime rules.

Why not try opening it from a shell.. xterm/kterm and manually type

shell$ xpdf /mnt/cdrom/ebooks/direacmono.pdf

There the mime should not come into picture.
