Forgot to mention its a CMI8330.  Anyway onto the more pressing matter...

Yes, that's something I'm aware of.  That it would be a problem with a
printer, though, especially one that's worked fine under 98se for years,
and XP, seems weird - the driver 2000 have should be exactly right.  Or so
logic says.

I'm very friendly with Device Manager.  Believe me.  *sigh*

NTFS - was recommended to me as a good way to go for a windows only box.

Yes!  Fantastic.  I have some lovely (ha) error codes now I can run through
google and microsoft to see what can be seen.  Thank you thank you thank you
