This has annoyed me also. It was one of the frustrations I had with
Ubuntu. As easy as it was to setup, when something went pear shaped &
needed troubleshooting, the "standard Linux way", config files, logs
etc. didn't apply.

Recently, I've installed Manjaro on my home desktop. It's based on
Arch, but is aimed at being easy to install, and have good hardware
detection without doing a lot of "custom" things. It was very easy to
install for me, it did detect all my hardware, and I'm finding it very
nice to use and to maintain. I just wanted to mention this distro for
people looking for something that does things the Arch way.

Additionally, I've found their user base on the forums to be polite
and friendly. This is an important factor to me, because having to
deal with trolls when needing community assistance or reporting bugs
is something life is too short for.
