NM worked well for me too, before I started tweaking it.

I know it sounds odd, but I just want my Debian command line control over 
bringing up network interfaces.  Ubuntu was so easy to use and install, I 
never got around to trying to put Debian on the lappy and now am paying 
for it, I think.
