I run fedora and this happens quite often when shifting disks around. Most of the time it's recoverable, but not a lot of fun fixing.
I start by doing what Akkana suggested and if that doesn't work I make a new initrd for the kernel. This usually always works.
Also, it's my understanding is that both fedora and ubuntu use a newer init. Be sure you're familiar with it.
