Hi Carla,

if you are on Ubuntu and you just want to mute the playback you can
install pavucontrol. This is a nice little gui which allows you to
control your pulseaudio streams. You can mute them or move them to a
different device. Other good packages to manage pulseaudio are
padevchooser and paman.
