I have knoppix 3.7 which I observe also uses hotplug. It behaved in the same way.

Scanner detected by $ sane-find-scanner
Scanner undetected by $ xscanimage, and whatever the k-word is for the main graphical scanner utility in the knoppix distribution (koogle?)

So next thing will be to load a new distro or maybe download a new knoppix, but not this week.
