It seems that Creative are universally despised amongst the digital audio
recording/producing crowd. One brand I hear mentioned favorably a lot is
M-Audio. They don't support Linux, but a lot of their hardware is "real"
hardware and not Winhardware. In general, USB devices that are really
standards-compliant, and not larded down with some sort of winfakery, should
work in Linux.
