I use mplayer from the command line.  I've yet to explore all that it can do
because I only use it for playing music.  It can handle playlists and
shuffling (that's as complex as I've gotten).

I compiled it myself from source (it was the first thing I ever compiled as
a rookie) and it wasn't hard at all.
