That might be a problem with the machine, indeed, because there's an
NMI error coming up during boot - it's what caused all the Win installs
to fail, I'm told. I just hadn't thought of it causing this kind of
problem!

I'll see if I can track that down today. I'm looking at this BadRam
thing - http://rick.vanrein.org/linux/badram/index.html, linked from
Memtest86 - and feeling a bit more hopeful!

Thanks for the input. I'll come back to the list with a report, just in
case anyone else runs into this!
