Some of the features you mention remind me very much of scribes
(scribes.sourceforge.net). It's a simple extensible editor. Not
packaged for many distributions yet, but possibly worth a try, takes
about an hour or 2 to get to know and use all the features and then
you're of. A flash demo is available here:
