It sounds like "desktop effects" (i.e. compiz) is getting activated
while it really shouldn't (because it doesn't work on that hardware,
obviously). If you go into the desktop effects dialog, are all the
checkboxes grayed out? Perhaps clicking the button twice in a row will
disable it. I'd have to get my hands on an ubuntu machine to check how
it disables, as I recall the user interface wasn't very clear to begin
with. A common ubuntu problem.
