I thought of this. apache is running as "apache" so I
mounted the volumes with apache as the user and
group; I did "su apache" and was able to browse in
the directories and read files, etc.

Yes, completely clean.

Thanks... I'm really at wit's end with this and it's
a production box, so I can't just keep restarting
and trying different kernel versions. (Tried the
lastest 2.6.17-1.2174 and it made no difference.)

I appreciate your help & suggestions and I'll see
if apache is giving in more details in debug mode.
