This might not help, but try:
xkbprint :0.0 my_kb.ps

then open and view my_kb.ps with gv, evince or whatever. 
It might tell you what X thinks the keys are. But it does sound like
you need a new key map.

Try searching on "multimedia keys" and including the brand/model number
of your keyboard perhaps?
