This is what my boyfriend says:
If you mean what kind of hardware you can use to connect to traditional
PSTN service, check www.digium.com for appropriate card (PRI,BRI,FXO,FXS).
In Asterisk you address them as trunks in the configuration. You can also
use SIP trunks to reach external Voip providers.
Hope that is of some help otherwise ask back again and he'll try to fill
in the blanks. Also check www.sipfoundry.org, they are doing great work.
