[Techtalk] printer config problems

Hi everyone.
I'm trying to configure my Debian machine to use a networked printer. So
far I haven't succeeded, and it's made OpenOffice take forever to load.
The problem seems to be explained here:
http://lists.debian.org/debian-openoffice/2003/08/msg00131.html
Unfortunately, I'm not savvy enough to really understand what the person
is saying.
Although I'd like to have a working printer, I don't use the printer
very often, so it's more important to me to have OpenOffice start up
quickly. So I uninstalled the Debian packages that I had installed
(cupsys-client, cupsys and cupsys-bsd, though I didn't pay attention to
the dependencies), and now there's no more lpc command. But OpenOffice
still takes a long time (literally minutes) to start.
Can anyone explain how to fix things so that OpenOffice starts in
reasonable time?
