Thanks for all the recommendations/feedback!   In the end, we decided
to stick with xfs because it really seems to be the best choice. 
Upgrading xfs and xfs_progs to the newest versions fixed many of the
issues we were having with it.

I was advised by multiple people not to use reiserfs until reiser4 is ready.
