HTML is an excellent way to start the software side.
They can see the results and HTML knowledge
will be useful in the future. Then you can step into
Javascript and maybe something stronger latter on.
On the hardware side, you could get hold of
some obsolete PCs, show them what's inside and
explain what each part does. Most people have
no idea what a chip set is or a bus. You could
get into Digital Logic. The idea here is to show
them the reasoning behind the hardware. Teach
them the basic logic gates ( XOR, OR, AND, NAND etc)
and get them to design a circuit using software
like LogicWorks. If you can get hold of a bag of TTL
chips you could have them put the circuit together on
breadboards. The voltage is way too low for them to
electricute themselves.
Give them a general idea what an OS is and how it
works. Get them to install some OSs ( Linux, FreeBSD, Windows )
so they learn all about partitioning, formating, the MBR, BIOS,
and CMOS. Most people have no idea how to edit the Windows
Registry and won't go near it.
You should emphasize that technology is continually changing,
and that a career in high tech demands constant learning and
an open mind to new ideas and methods.
Don't overload yourself. You're the one who has to set up all
these lessons and mark them too!
