The lego remote control car kits are pretty cool for learning 
programming.  You build the car, then hook it up to a computer.  On the 
computer you build a little program to control it, ie. when it hits an 
object it will go backwards one foot, turn clockwise 90 degrees, and go 
forward in another direction.  Programs can include if/else statements 
and for/while loops.  Then disconnect it from the computer and watch it 
go.
