If I were you, I would stick with a kernel before 2.6.8, (I'm using
2.6.7) and here's why:

In the past, kernel developers would make sure a kernel is stable
before releasing a new version.  Now, however, they are leaving the
job of stabilizing the kernel to the people who package it for linux
distributions.  (At least that's the way I understand what happened, I
may be off a bit).

If you download a kernel from your distribution (e.g. from gentoo the
latest is sys-kernel/development-sources-2.6.9_rc2) you should be
alright.
