That article seems somewhat out of date.  When you log into godaddy.com
and manage a domain, one of the options is "Set Name Servers"

When you set a nameserver and choose "Custom Name Servers", you are only
allowed to enter nameservers by name and they must be already registered
with Network Solutions.

I've ended up keeping one domain at Network Solutions just so I can keep
my name servers registered.
