In addition to looking at "bare bones" (no OS installed) or build it
yourself laptops, another option is a laptop with Linux preinstalled. A
friend of mine has one of these:

The one drawback to LinuxCertified laptops is that their tech support is
less than optimal if you don't keep their pre-installed version of Linux
that came with the laptop.
