Yes, that's correct. I know that domain registration itself doesn't have
much to do with operating system, but I was thinking that maybe there
would be a company that would contribute to open source in addition to
providing domain regristration service. Number of people have mentioned
Gandi.net and that's the registrar I am currently using.

User-mode Linux sounds an interesting and inexpensive option, but I am
not so sure I'd really want to set up all the services by myself and
keep up to date with security updates. Since I most likely will be
buying two new domains, maybe I will host another one using user-mode
Linux server and let the other one be hosted by traditional hosting
company. 

(Sidenote: I find it a bit unfortunate that abbreviation for user-mode
Linux is UML. For us who have background in software development UML
equals to Unified Modelling Language!)

I also received off the list one recommendation. Since this company
offers the best hosting packages I've seen so far, I'll mention them
here on the list as well in case somebody else is interested:
