Appologies for the double post.  Occasionally my ISP's outgoing SMTP is a bit 
crappy.

Hmm... I've just checked the mx records.  It looks like my ISP uses their 
outgoing smtp server as their secondary incoming mail server.  That would 
explain why sometimes performance is sometimes up the creak and it takes ages 
to get a 5 line email sent.  :-(
