A lot of people report having problems getting the HP 9100i to work on Linux.
Try this, this gets into the guts of diagnosis and configuration. Oh yeah, and
be sure to try writing CDs as root, cdrecord only works as root. Some
graphical front-ends to cdrecord, like K3b, make it easy to give ordinary
users write permissions.
