Which utility is asking for a new filesystem? If its one of the GUI
tools then they're probably just trying to make it easy for the user,
but the raw fdisk certainly doesn't.

Try booting up with a rescue disk that has cfdisk/fdisk installed
(most do) and setting it to the way it was.
