In relation to OpenOffice.org, I guess it depends whether you want to go
the debian way or obtain the compressed tar file from OpenOffice.org.
The debian package is currently only for Intel x86 machines. I receive the
posts from the debian-openoffice at lists.debian.org list and the recent posts
have not been associated with difficulty in installing. The developers and
users on the debian-openoffice at lists.debian.org are very helpful, so if you
are experiencing difficulty with the debian package install I would seek
assistance here, or on IRC #debian-oo. See:
http://packages.debian.org/unstable/editors/openoffice.org.html
In the past I have seen posts about not having Java installed. I think you
need at lease JRE 1.3. It's easier to have this installed before instlling
OpenOffice.org. You can get JRE for Linux from:
http://www.blackdown.org/java-linux/mirrors.html
Initially, I did experience difficulty installing OpenOffice.org and I
think it was because I did not follow the installation instructions. I
can't remember where I tripped up, but it may be related to where
OpenOffice.org places files where I did not expect them. I had a similar
experience with the dictionaries.
Instructions for installing OpenOffice.org from tar.gz:

Instructions for downloading and installing dictionaries:

Colleagues have compiled from source and said it was easy, but I have seen
a few posts on the developers list that indicate that some people have
experienced problems. You can post to the users at openoffice.org list to
obtain assistance with this.
If you do download from OpenOffice.org, there are Md5 checksums for the
english version.
Hope this helps.
All the best
