hi, yes, it does sound familiar to some problems i have had with various
versions of Mandrake... although i didnt have the system.map stuff...
i remember problems with X and lockfiles very vividly... usually it
resulted in x respawning endlessly.. which i still dread every time i do
a major upgrade...

one thing that did work was to go through deleting every lock file...
they're only needed for one session so you can safely delete them...
along with pretty much all of /tmp ....
