I don't know if it changed in Gnome 2, but in Gnome 1.4 these are the
menu configuration files that can be hand edited , that I know of :

1. /usr/share/gnome/apps - holds the subsections for the 'Programs'
Section . To create a subsection, create a directory, to create a linking
to the program directly, place the program.desktop file here.
And, to create link to the program , place the program.desktop file
in the subdirectory corresponsing to the subsection you want it to be.

2. For the Applets it is /usr/share/applets with the same theory.
(For applets to get the applets launch you have to copy the
applet shared library to /usr/lib too)

The icons for the programs are specified in the program.desktop file, and
the icons for each subsection is specified in the .directory file in that
particular subdirectory.

That's how much I know. I'm guessing that since the icons for subsections
are specified in the .directory file , if you search for all .directory files
in
your system, you would be able to identify the directories that stand for
each subsection. :-)

Pls let me know if this holds for Gnome 2 . :-)
