Andrew,
You have Mandrake 8.2, IIRC, right? Early in the start-up sequence,
there's a line (or should be - it's in 8.1, and I can't imagine it being
changed) that says "Type l for interactive startup" or something like
that. Look for it. That should get you to a point where you can choose
to skip networking, then go in and check out the stuff the Mandi
suggested.
