I have never actually had to do it, but you can restore
things in /lost+found to the right place. 

When the filesystem gets mangled, the box can end up knowing
the contents of files but not which files they are, or where
they're supposed to be. So it puts them in /lost+found for
you to sort out.

I _believe_ you can just edit the /lost+found file and put
bits back where you think they should live. If you can't, I
am sure someone else will post and say "Argh, no, don't, and
here's why" :)
