Depends...  if you have a 3-button mouse, use the middle button to paste. 
If you have a 2-button mouse, it sounds like you forgot to configure X to
emulate a 3-button mouse...  this emulation treats L+R buttons as the
Middle button... in this case, check your /etc/X11/XF86Config[-4] for the
settings in the "Pointer section"
