The issue is the license.  The source code for many Linux products uses
the GNU license.  This means you can modify the source code to meet your
own needs.  So this means someone can take the code of the kernel and
modify it to meet their personal needs.  This "freedom of use" is what
makes GNU stuff free.  Free like speech not beer. (or something like
that)
