One thing I've found that conflicts occasionally is gpm (the console mouse 
driver), so if one loads it and the other doesn't don't discount it as a 
possible problem.

  Terri (who was quite pleased to discover that her optical mouse works 
concurrently with the touchpad, no problem at all.  Yeay!)
