I think it's a weird error, and it's associated with the 'screen' program,
which you mentioned that you were using.

Here's one instance where somebody had the same error:

"The screen message you got is because the port compiles to use the
Nethack-style error messages. It can be configured not to if you look
through the config files."

So it seems to be the screen program barfing.
